Aosenma CG028 Review – GPS Drone With Brushless Motors For Under $100

Hello and welcome to my review of the Aosenma CG028, a low-cost GPS drone.

Drones are very fun to fly and because they are so popular now, there are a lot of drones to choose from and many like the Aosenma CG028 are cheap GPS drones that cost less than $100.

These types of drones are perfect for beginners, they are easy to fly and come with some advanced features that make even more fun to fly.

I do have to caution you about something and that is to not believe the hyped-up claims about this drone on its product page.

It’s a good drone especially for its price, but you shouldn’t really expect to purchase an actual 4K camera drone for under $100, which is what is suggested by the product description page.

However, if you can get past the claims about its camera and exaggerated flight time, this is a good drone to purchase especially for beginners.

Aosenma CG028 Review

The Aosenma CG028 is a nice looking drone, it doesn’t stand out design-wise, but it is a foldable drone which is my favourite type of drone because they are compact, and this makes them easier to carry around.

It comes with a nice grey Styrofoam carry case which is an added bonus as it means you will not need to purchase one yourself.

This is a GPS enabled drone which is a fantastic feature to have especially for a drone that costs under $100. GPS provides the drone with certain benefits like being able to track it on your smartphone via the official drone app, automatic return home and more stable flying capability.

This is also one of the cheapest drones that I have reviewed that comes with brushless motors, most drones under $100 come with the cheaper and less powerful brushed motors.

With brushless motors, this drone is able to hover more accurately and its flight is more stable even in mildly windy conditions.

One thing I have to mention is that although this drone is fairly lightweight (it weighs just 352g), since weighs over 250g, you will need to register it if you live in the USA, Canada or the UK.

As far as I am aware, most other countries do not require any kind of registration if you are just going to be flying for fun. However, since drone laws are constantly being updated, I highly advise you to check that the rules are wherever you live just so to make sure you are complying with the law.

The official flight time for this drone is 25 minutes, this is a little exaggerated, tests have shown it to stay up in the air for around 18 minutes. Now, 18 minutes of flight time for a drone that costs less than $100, is particularly good, it probably has the best flight time in its price range, so why they need to exaggerate it is kind of confusing.

The drone is powered by an 11.1v 1500 mAh lithium polymer battery, it’s one the newer modular batteries that keep their charge for longer and hence the decent flight time.

The battery takes around 3 hours to fully recharge, so if you would like to extend the flight time without having to wait for the battery to recharge, you should purchase one or two extra batteries.

The remote controller is one of the nicer looking drone controllers I have comes across, it has a simple design and has an LCD screen in the middle that displays telemetry data about the drone. So, with a quick glance, you can see how many satellites the drone has locked onto, its signal strength the battery level, the height and distance of the drone and its current speed. It a pair of fake antennas on the top and smartphone holder that pulls out from the bottom.

The controller is powered by an internal lithium polymer battery that lasts a few hours and takes around half an hour to recharge.

The controller has an overall range of around 800 meters and for FPV the range is much shorter at around 500 meters.

If you want to use the FPV and smart flight modes, you will need to download its official app which is called the VS GPS app and is available for both Android and iOS smartphones.

However, a word of caution for people who are looking to purchase this drone, as the controller uses 5G technology for video transmission, you can only use the FPV and smart flight modes if you have a smartphone that has 5G cellular technology. You can still fly the drone and record videos via the remote controller, but all the other features will not be accessible if your smartphone does not have 5G technology.

Aosenma CG028 Camera

So, cameras are one of the main features of a drone and probably the main reason why they have grown in such popularity over the past few years.

Now, as I said near the beginning of this article, the claims made about this drone’s camera on its product page is way over-exaggerated.

It is not a true 4K drone, it doesn’t record videos in 4K, only the photos are in 4K resolution and even then, it’s not real 4K but interpolated from 1080p to 4K via the app.

The camera records video footage in 1080p HD and for its price, the quality is pretty decent, .obviously you cannot use the videos and photos recorded by this camera for professional reasons but you can still enjoy them with family and friends.

A good feature of this camera is that you can adjust the angle via the remote controller and get better viewing angles. Usually, cheap the cameras on cheap drones can only be manually adjusted before take-off which is very inconvenient.

There is a micro SD card slot on the nose of the drone, this will allow you to record your video on a memory card where the quality is usually much better than if you were to record the video footage on your phone. You can insert a memory card that has a maximum capacity of 32gb and one that is class 10 or above.

Aosenma CG028 – Other Features

Even though it is a cheap GPS drone, it does come with some intelligent features such as smart flight modes and an automatic return to home feature.

The smart flight modes include the following:

Smart follow me – The drone locks onto your smartphone and follows you from behind.

Smart orbit mode – Lock the drone onto any point of interest and the drone will automatically orbit that position.

Waypoint – This smart flight mode allows you to draw a flight path on the drone app and the drone will fly along that path automatically.

The drone comes with an automatic return to home feature, this feature is activated whenever the drone battery gets low on charge or if you lose connection with the drone. You can also activate the feature via the remote controller or the app.

A lot of drones have these features now and while they may seem a little gimmicky for low-cost drones, they are fun to use.

Flight Performance

I had never heard of this drone brand before, so I was a little concerned that its flight performance may be a little underwhelming. However, the drone does fly well, it hovers accurately and the flight is very stable, it even holds up pretty well in mildly windy conditions. The app is a little hit and miss, it sometimes crashes but that is not unique to this drone, many apps from smaller drone companies can sometimes be a little problematic. Also, I must mention this again, if you don’t have a smartphone with 5G technology, the FPV and smart flight modes will not work.

Final Thoughts
